Here we are at Cassan Pier near St Johns Point Lighthouse in Co Donegal on a January morning on a training exercise for our new Scuba instructor candidates
At Inishowen Sub Aqua Club, becoming a Level 1 Scuba instructor—known as “Moniteur 1”—is more than just earning a new qualification. It’s a journey that many of our members take as they grow from enthusiastic beginner divers to trusted leaders in the Donegal waters.
Starting Out: Building Experience
Most of our instructors began just like anyone else: curious about the sea, eager to learn, and maybe a little nervous on their first few dives. As club members gain experience, they move through the diver grades, learning not just the technical skills but also how to dive safely, look after a buddy, and enjoy the unique challenges of Irish waters.
Taking the Next Step: Leading and Teaching
After reaching the “Leading Diver” level, some members feel the pull to do more. That’s when the idea of becoming an instructor starts to take hold. The club is always supportive—offering advice, encouragement, and plenty of opportunities to assist with training sessions. It’s common to see future instructors helping out at the pool, sharing tips on mask clearing, or guiding new divers through their first open water experiences.
Instructor Training: Learning to Teach
The official instructor training is a mix of classroom sessions, pool practice, and open water teaching. This exercise is Cassan Pier is the “Open Water” part of the Diving Ireland syllabus. Our members learn how to break down complex ideas into simple steps, how to spot and fix common problems, and how to create a welcoming, safe environment for everyone. There’s a real sense of teamwork—experienced instructors mentor those in training, and everyone celebrates each milestone along the way.
Assessment and Recognition
To qualify as a Moniteur 1, members must show they can teach, manage groups, and handle emergencies. The final assessment is practical and hands-on, reflecting the real-world situations instructors will face. Passing isn’t just about knowledge—it’s about showing you can support and inspire others.
A Club That Grows Its Own Leaders
What makes this journey special in our club is the community behind it. Every instructor started as a beginner here, and each one remembers what it felt like to be new. That shared experience creates a culture where learning, support, and encouragement are part of every dive. As our members become instructors, they don’t just gain a qualification—they become part of a tradition of helping others discover the magic of diving.
