That’s us all booked a liveaboard diving trip to Hurghada, Egypt in Summer 2023 on the Golden Dolphin 2!
We have managed to fill the boat again this year with a variety of clubs across Ireland and the UK as well as fellow divers from Austria & Denmark.
Located on the Red Sea, Hurghada is home to some of the most breathtaking dive sites in the world. With the Golden Dolphin 2 as our base, we have easy access to a variety of incredible dive sites, including the famous Thistlegorm and Abu Nuhas.
We typically all bring our own scuba kit and just rent the cylinder – an all you can eat Nitrox package.
This really is the most relaxing type of scuba diving where we roll out of our bunks and are already at the dive site ready to go. No humping bottles or early starts to get onto day boats before they leave. We usually do at least 3 dives a day and have a rest day mid week to make sure we don’t get too loaded up with Nitrogen.
The SS Thistlegorm is probably the most famous wreck in the Red Sea. The British cargo ship was on its way to bring military equipment of all kinds for the British troops in North Africa. But then on the 6 th of October 1941 a German bomber attacked it. The wreck is lying upright on the sea-bottom at 32m depth. Especially interesting is the cargo: Tanks, trucks, motorcycles, weapons, railway carriage and two railway engines. It has become a haven for a wide range of marine life. As you explore the wreck, you’ll see colorful schools of fish, turtles, and even the occasional shark.
Abu Nuhas, on the other hand, is home to a variety of beautiful coral reefs and a wide range of tropical fish. It’s a great place to see everything from colorful parrotfish to graceful manta rays. It also has a great array of wrecks – some say this is because of the generous insurance terms available to Greek shipping companies back in the day.
Summer is the perfect time to visit Hurghada, as the weather is warm and sunny, with little chance of rain. Plus, the waters of the Red Sea are crystal clear, making for excellent visibility while diving. It’s great to get into a 3 mm wetsuit and ditch the hood for once.
Its great to have this to look forward to as we pass the shortest day of the Irish winter !
